Spelling Activities

Spelling words accurately will help your child write and read more fluently. Please help your child to learn how to spell the words from their weekly spelling list. Encourage your child to use their best handwriting. Below you will find many ideas to help keep your child interested in the process of learning how to spell. Spelling Activities: Write the number of the activity you are doing on you paper then complete the activity using the spelling words for the current week.

How do I do it? 
1 
Rainbow Writing 

Write your spelling words in pencil and then use two or three different colored crayons to trace over the words.

Pyramid Writing 


Write the first letter of your word, and then on the next line, write the first two letters of your word. Continue doing this until you have the word spelled.

Red Vowels 
Write your words in pencil. Then trace over the vowels with a red pencil, pen, or crayon.

Consonant Circles 
Write your words in pencil. Then circle the consonants with a pen, colored pencil, or crayon.

Salt/Sugar Writing
Ask an adult to pour some salt/sugar on a cookie sheet and write your spelling words in the salt/sugar. Have the adult has sign in your calendar that you completed this.

Tongue Twisters 
Choose five of your spelling words and write a tongue twister sentence using each of them in a sentence. (All words will start with the same letter. Example: Pink pigs play the piano.) Underline the spelling word.

Sentence 
Writing 
Write a sentence for each spelling word. Underline your spelling word.

Computer Writing 
Type your words on the computer, print out, and bring to school.

Hidden Words
Draw a picture. "Hide" your words in the picture

Flash Cards
Make flash cards for your spelling words. Turn them in on Friday.

ABC Order 
Write all your spelling words in ABC order.

Word Search or
Cross Word
Go to http://www.puzzlemaker.com/ and make a word search or cross word puzzle using your spelling words.

Definition Writing
Pick 5 spelling words, write what each word means and then draw a picture showing your spelling word. Underline your spelling words.

Glue It Writing 
Cut out letters from newspapers, magazines or make different kinds on the computer. Glue them to your paper.

Code Writing 
Write your spelling words using a code. 
Example: 1 = a, 2 = b, 3 = c, 4 = d, 5 = e 
(bed = 2,5,4 )
